What is Shangralide?
Shangralide is an IFF proprietary Oliffac™ musk specialty created to reproduce the depth of natural deer musk without animal sources. The concentrate contains ~55 % of the polycyclic musk hexamethyl-indanopyran (HHCB, Galaxolide) dissolved in dipropylene glycol plus trace auxiliaries, yielding a readily dosable liquid with high oxidative and colour stability (IFF, 2024).
Historical Background
Polycyclic musks emerged in the 1950 s; HHCB itself was introduced by IFF in 1965 and quickly became the market-dominant “clean” musk (Sell, 2019).
The blend was designed to enrich HHCB with subtle leather-toned co-ingredients, catering to niche-perfumery demand for animalic realism while remaining vegan-compliant.
Olfactory Profile & Performance
Scent family: Animalic-musk (polycyclic)
Key descriptors: Sweet · musky · animalic · leather · warm-powdery
Role in fine fragrance:
Provides a naturalistic musk backbone in chypre-leather and floral-oriental compositions.
Rounds phenolic indoles and amplifies cedar/oud nuances.
Synergises with other polycyclic musks such as [[Galaxolide]] for volume, or macrocyclic musks like [[Ambrettolide]] for polish.
Industrial & Technical Uses
Beyond fine fragrance, Shangralide is utilised in fabric softeners, laundry detergents, scented candles, and water-based air-care emulsions owing to its high fibre substantivity and diffusion through heated wax matrices (IFF, 2024).
